THE AGEING EYE
Many changes can affect the eyes as we get older. Some of the more common ones include:
DRY EYE
This is a very common eye problem and can cause itchy watery gritty eyes.
Top Tip: Ground Linseed 1.5 Dessert Spoons in porridge daily helps healthy tear production. An alternative would be linseed/flaxseed oil capsules or linseed oil. If nothing seems to work please make an appointment at The Optical Centre to discuss punctual plugs.
CATARACT
This is caused by a clouding of the lens in the eye. In the early stages changing the lens in your glasses will improve vision. As the cataract matures and your vision becomes more blurred it is sometimes necessary for the Optometrist to arrange a visit to an eye surgeon to arrange to replace this cloudy lens with a new one.
MACULAR DEGENERATION
This is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in Europe. There are two types of macular degeneration wet and dry. The treatment of macular degeneration depends on the type you have. Risk factors include:
UV LIGHT
Farmers, Athletes and Golfers are at risk of UV damage and should wear UV protective Sunglasses.
Top Tip: Oily fish and green leafy vegetables are thought to reduce the risk.
